Curly Girl Method - How I am finally embracing my curls

Updated: Jun 30, 2020

Hey lovelies! As some of you may have seen on social media I am really starting to embrace my Curly Girl Journey. My hair is a part of me that I had never really taken much care of, it has always been curly but I never liked the curls and all I ever wanted to have was straight hair. (You always want what other people have). I realised that I had been constantly damaging my hair for the past 10 years and not loving or caring for the curls that I was blessed with.

This time last year, Emily, a really good friend of mine, had told me to follow the Curly Girl Method. She had been following this process for 6 months now and the changes that it had made to her hair in such a short space of time were incredible. I wanted the same results!

The Curly Girl Method (CGM) was first made popular by a hairstylist named Lorraine Massey back in December 2001. At a time when pin-straight hair was the ideal look for all women, it was considered revolutionary to embrace curls. Ideal for those with natural and unrelaxed hair, this method relies heavily on conditioner and styling gels that are free of sulphates. The result is that your curls will eventually become moisturized and full of bounce.

There are so many different guides and advice on the internet when it comes to how to style your curls, what products to use and how often to wash it, it does become quite overwhelming. Over the last year, I have had some really good results, really bad results and some washes that make it seem I am taking 1 step forward 2 steps back. The point I really must stress to those who are going through this journey is to be patient. Not every wash day will turn out the same, not every product that you are recommended will work for your hair, every hair type is different and requires different styling products. It is all just trial and error. I am still finding what works for me and I am 1 year in. Keep going!

As of the 1st April 2020, I hit my 1 year Curly Girl anniversary. I had been following the curly girl advice for 365 days and my god was it an experience, to say the least.

Along the way, I learnt some really good techniques which work for my hair and products I now can't live without. I have listed those down below for you, as well as some photos to keep you inspired.

My hair post CGM. (October 2018)

My hair after my first wash day. (April 1st 2019)

6 months in! (September 2019)

November 2019 - After my first curly cut! (@curlclinic) 7 months in!

December 2019- 8 months in!

I must then say at the 8-month mark, my hair kinda stopped. It wouldn't curl how it used to, all of the curls became stringy and weak. I gave my hair a rest for a while. I stopped using any products on it apart from shampoo and conditioner and let it air dry to try and get it back on track. This is normal, it just happens to peoples hair at different times.

I've realised that my hair needs this sometimes. It needs a rest. Maybe every couple of months now I just let my hair do what it wants if it curls nicely it curls nicely, if it looks like I've been dragged through a bush then I try and make it look good.
